Auckland BMW Marathon & Half Marathon
A shame there was no Wesley corporate team for the Auckland Half as the boys would have cleaned up- esp with no rego#'s to fill in. A good effort by Al to stay ahead of the leading women. Wesley picked up Silver and Bronze in the Auckland Marathon Champs thanks to some consistent pacemaking by Ian for the first 20kms and some great support for Rodders and Mike round the back from Al and Rob. David
Moorman picked up a 4th in the half, his first competitive effort in the vets grade (his Dad placed one better in the 75+ division). Great 1st half by young Andrew Haigh and more improvement from the now Magee coached JD. Nice picture of Mike Meyer on the back of the Herald too.

22 September Tasman Road Champs
2nd place overall to Phil Wright(ex Wesley) 1st vet in 34:26, 7 sec behind the winner, in hot windy conditions(not bad for 5k). Well done Phil. Wesley B team Manager role is still up for grabs!

22 September Auckland Road Relay Champs
Venue: Ti Papa Equestrian & Special Events Centre, Brookby Road, Brookby, Manukau City
Senior Men 's race comprises of 7 legs over varied terrain. The course follows the loop road around the Centre three times.

Unfortunately three key pullouts during the final week took its toll on the Wesley A and B team performances. Gutsy A Team debuts by Andrew Haigh and Michael Skea kept the team in with a chance but no medal this year. Great team spirit was shown to get the B team around to the finish line, with lap 6 demonstrating great team ingenuity with a 3 man effort(luckily the referees didn't notice the metamorphose of the Wesley runner changing size, hair colour, shorts, you get the idea!).

Special mention should be made of Robos entry into GROTY Award for 2001. Whilst in the final moments of preparation for his lap, you know - the double knotting of the laces, the grooming of the hair, tucking in of the singlet, the smoothing of the shorts - oh whats this ?!?!?! my lining is showing, no tuck it in, no it won't go ..... meanwhile Dean Foster is powering his way down the mountain and now only 300 yards from the transition .... no it can't be .... yes Robo has his shorts on inside out ... yes I kid you not .. and he even dresses himself!!!! Don't worry I yell just go for it noone will notice, but style has always been higher on the agenda than performance for our Great British Miler... off to the fence line whilst Nicky Foster stands with camera in hand but being the lady she is she looked forward cheering on Dean as he approached the line...I look oh no shame Robo has dropped his daks and is bearing all for any who care to look...has any greater shame been bought on the Wesley singlet??????? I do not know ... can anybody verify a greater moment for the black & yellow singlet? I can say that for a white pommie he does have an all over tan! Eventually, life did stand still for a moment or two, Robo heads for the line and reaches it just as Deano crosses the line exhausted from his efforts and relieved that the yellow singlet appeared, just in time, out from the clamoring crowds. Robo you are the WEAKEST LINK ... good bye.

I am relieved to confirm that Nicky is recovering well from the experience and there is not expected to be any lasting effects.

15 September Honey Pot Mile(Lemon-Suck Mile)
Venue: Cornwall Park. Reverse of the Beehive Mile course
Despite last minute protests the course was reversed for the first time in its history and was subsequently renamed by some bitter competitors. Sussex and Potter headed field over the first half and once in the clear there was no stopping the Beehive Mile champion of 1983/84. Thanks to Pascoe(calf injury) who managed to start the race overtake the runners and be there at the finish to record the times.

1 September NZ 100KM Road Champs
While some of us were braving the cold in Auckland, Wesley was establishing another NZ Champion over the roads of Rotorua. KB Pascoe, coach extraordinaire, had decided late in the piece to guide his runner remotely and remain in his mountain retreat, carefully planning Mikes every move. Unfortunately he forgot to move himself and was thereby restricted to the occassional cell phone instruction via fiance Anne undertaking her first ultra race. Despite Pascoe's efforts and intermittant instructions Mike held together well and came home strongly to wrestle first place off Mark Bright in the closing kilometres - well done Mike, Anne & Blobby.

Official record of events courtesy of www.coolrunning.co.nz;
"Light rain and drizzle characterised this years running, on a slightly changed course. The event saw two records set, Mike Potter on his first time at the Rotorua 100 set a course record, while in 15th place overall walker Gerald Manderson set not only a course record but national 100km record. Very pleasing to see no DNFs, despite a mishap for 5 of the competitors who covered an additional 4km or so due to a wrong turn in the dark, early in the 100k event."

26 August Auckland Road Champs
Venue: Viaduct Basin, Waitemata Plaza, Viaduct Harbour, Auckland
Highlight of the day was Andrew Haigh's bronze medal in the Auckland Champs - another great performance for this up & coming athlete(surely his Dad has nothing to do with it!)
Mike Potter also looks in excellent condition for his 100km debut, powering through the field in the 2nd half - "He ran just as I had told him" gloated his coach from the North Shore residence. He will be firing next week and I'll be there every step of the way to help & guide him.

Race format: All road, handicap start
Course: Out & back, flat/undulating with 3 short

"Kerry - You'll be pleased to know that the Wesley club achieved a steal @ the prestige Lynndale Howells Cup event held at United North Piha Surf Club today.
Due to your none too brilliant handicapping skills, Bob Elder - with your est time of 43:20 butchered for outrageous guesswork to 42:00 - finished in an actual time of 39:33 for the calibrated 8.0km course, thus cleaning out 2nd & 3rd blokes across the line, Messrs Foster & Rowbotham (also (yawn) Wesley) some 3 min further back.
Should not have started these two together as they keyed off each other and were only 8 secs apart @ the finish! They were both within 40 secs of est times, however on your effort with Bob E...the big DCM for you boy..lookin' for a new job... maybe Lap 7 @ Akaroa 0n 6 Oct, eh?"

22 July Nike Grand Prix Final Race 5 - Nike AUCKLAND CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP
Venue: Auckland Domain Grandstand
Conditions turned out to be pretty good despite the expected bog the rain had dried out in most places. The conditions were still very soft under foot and the introduction of a couple of hurdles this year made life interesting for a few(eh Rodney!). I'm sure Phil Wright would of love to have been here to show his style over the barriers. Finally the perfect conditions Phil and you weren't here! Well done to those who made it to the centennial event and got to meet/see many of the champions of the past including our own AB Magee and Evan McGuire - maybe next year Wesley will be back on top - hey Andrew?

Special mention must be made of the appearance of one other past champion(Junior Men mind you & not good enough to be part of the official photographs!!) - Mr B Pascoe(Blobby). After being witness to many of Kerry's start line adventures over the past decade, this year I was priviledged to be a contributing party. Not knowing his start time and then being late for departure, Pascoe was wisked to the Domain from his North Shore residence during which he got dressed and mentally prepared himself by realising what he had left behind. "I was all organised until that phone call just as you arrived!!".

As it happened he was driven right to the door step given his $15 entry fee and despatched to registration. After parking the car I was amazed to see the start slightly delayed providing Pascoe the perfect warmup, 2 small circles, and he was away with no one aware of the drama prior to the start line. Unfortunately that is were the fairy tale ended and reality bit in - read on to find out the results and kids please note a 20 minute warm up is really what you need not 20 minutes in the car. Pascoe's results should be read with the knowledge that he was seen jogging very slowly trying to encourage another "top" runner of the past keep going - a true sportsman?

14 July Club Cross Country Championships
Venue: Cornwall Park - 8000m
Good conditions and no rain, for a change, met the start of this year's championships. Numbers were down due to holidays, overseas trips, sickness, etc, but those that participated found the course to be as tough as ever. Jones took out the Veteran title in absence of the mighty Blobby Boy who after a week on the coast had managed to get his weekends mixed up. We look forward to a battle for the title at the road champs. Thanks to Alan for laying out the course, John for timekeeping, and Robo & Maxine, plus New love birds Dean & Nicky Foster for their sideline support - we hope to see them all running at the road champs.

Having made a late decision to run this one myself I was glad I made the effort to have a go over this rather unfriendly short distance. The races were well organised and the combined fields meant there was plenty of competition and the race program was short. (The beautiful weather helped as well). If you haven't tried this one before make sure you give it a go next year.

17 June Papakura 1/2 Marathon(Auckland Championships)
Venue: Garden Bar, Jolly Farmer Hotel, Great South Road, Drury. Race report from Mike P.
Sunshine and a clear sky greeted Rodney, Mike, Brohn, Mike and the other 465 runners and walkers in the Papakura 10km and 1/2. Rodney was out to run even splits on 35 minutes and was looking good to do so at 5km. Mike P was content to run steadily a little further back while
Mark Bright took charge at the front, closely followed by Ian Richards, Stephen Smith and a chasing bunch of 5 or 6. By 10km the many hills began to take their toll as Mike caught up to Rodney(35:50). The two Wesley boys then made their move through the field with Mike leading the singing and Rodney hanging in. At the front Brighty and Richards had a great battle with the Vet, a former Commonwealth Games Gold Medal cyclist, proving just too good in the
closing stages. Further back Brohn was ploughing through the hills, eventually breaking 90 minutes on what was a very tough, hilly course not helped by a perpetual headwind. Meanwhile Mike Torckler had already finished his 10km in a great time having backed up from the National Secondary Schools x- country (81st /Yr9 Boys) the day before.

Highlight of the day was the downpour timed perfectly for the start of the prizegiving. Mike managed to collect a Lynndale umbrella as a spot prize. Look out for it at future events!

The weather held off nicely for the event and with the late arrival of the grass-catching handicapper we decided to handicap ourselves - the below results indicate we did a pretty good job. Well done to Asher who managed to hold out a fast finishing Jones boy. Thanks to Clive, the sick one Robo and the handicapper for taking times and looking pretty. Reasonably firm conditions greeted everyone except for the usual bog down behind the start/finish area. Special thanks to Al Meredity for feeling guilty enough to turn out for club despite a dodgy back. Also a special note of welcome to Michael Skea who made his debut for the club and a note of best wishes to Brohn who probably ran his last prior to heading South. Only four points separated us from 3rd place so not a bad effort given the number of guys who were overseas/sick/sitting exams/or otherwise enagaged...well done.

Report from Paul Norton(Life Member now living in CHC) - stirring stuff!!
Yes we won the Gold in the teams with 2.42,2.44. 2.45 and 2.46 w e had a great team effort - 11 hours and 3 secs. actually. My calf totally blew at 16k and I literally ran with my teth gritted for 26k! I felt fit enough - 81.07 and 81.42 halves but was in agony. Couldn't walk afterwards and have already had 2 x physio sessions, so I'll be out of action for a while. Hope the 7 mans goes well.Ran with Phil Wright for 25k or so - he died a little at the end and did 2.53.

28 May Pakuranga Macrennie X-Country (Lloyd Elsmore Park)
Despite the soggy foot conditions there were pretty good numbers in the fields, although not too many Wesleys. Those that made the effort put in some pretty good performances with standout performance by Andrew Haigh finishing only 28 seconds behind the winner. Excellent effort also by Sophie in very trying conditions.

20 May Huntly 1/2 Marathon (Huntly)
A select few headed to Huntly. Al with 1/2 a back in place performed as we all know he can with house mate Rodney not too far behind. Although her husband has knobbled his elbow from competing in that dangerous sport of cycling Mrs Pugh made up for his non appearance with a sterling effort. We do wish Kevin a speedy recovery and the word is that he may actually be out next week with steel plates and screws to boot.

May 5 ACA Pair's Race (Cornwall Park)
Well it was a disappointing turn out from Wesley at this event, which was well supported and well run. Suggest you try it next year for a bit of a change from the usual race. What was missing in quantity was made in pure quality....

April 28 Rotorua Marathon
A number of Wesleys (past & present) were in action in Rotorua this year. The day was cool and with no rain it was pretty good running conditions and there were some good performances as a result. Ian and Mike showed prominently on the TV coverage as they were closely covered by a number of the leading women over the opening 15kms. I can confirm that none of them could manage the negative splits of the Wesley boys.

April 21 Southland Centennial Relay
The club only entered two teams this year both in the senior men's division with some pretty solid results. The conditions at Lovelock Track were firm under foot with even a bit of sunshine thrown in.

April 14 Wesley Beehive Mile(One Tree Hill)
Potter showed some good track speed to have the race under control at halfway. Multi-previous champ Al Meredity could only manage a stop watch this time as he was suffering from an early cold. Thanks also to Barry for helping out get times, places and names all together on the same sheet of paper - not an easy achievement based on previous race experiences.
