Sunday 4 November 2002 Auckland 1/2 & Full Marathon

Venue: Devonport, Takapuna, Harbour Bridge, Victoria Park plus for the marathon up & back Tamaki Drive.
Reasonable weather conditions and another full field 6800 for the 1/2 and another 600+ for the full marathon. The Torklers were up from New Plymouth with some marathon efforts and El Presidente led the girls through the 1/2 before putting the foot down and gaining revenge over Melissa Moon from the foot of the harbour bridge. Thanks to the many supporting parties along the way and "you are in better form than this" from Mr Potter which galvanised me into action.

Did any body else run? Let me know.

Venue: Cornwall Park(Uphill course from Greenlane Road to Sorrento)
Great anticipation on this one, even a small crowd at the start line, with high Junior expectations for a victory over the seniors. However, EGOs were not as strong as the legs of two of the field although it wasn't by much. Jeremy put in an outstanding effort to finish so close and take out A Haigh in a bitterly fought contest.

NZ National Road Relay - Senior Report 28/9/02 Fielding
As is typical when you try to organise a group of runners to enter an event, late withdrawals, non commitments, injuries, and miscommunication are all part of the mix and half the battle is actually getting a team to the start line. In the past runners have even been lost in transit, never to be seen again, and late substitutes are made by plan or foul measure. 2002 has been no different with a number of the Seniors unavailable due to the usual raft of reasons and even in the last week two new runners were sort to complete the lineup. We made it and to our amazement by Friday 11:45pm the final team members had arrived at Flock House, Bulls, our base for the weekend.

Having failed to make the A Grade lineup for the first time in a number of years we were targeting a performance of credit and enjoyment - this year the performances had to come from the juniors. The day dawned with a reasonably settled outlook although the overnight wind had not completely dissipated and when we walked out of HQ we realised that it was also windy outside. This wind was likely to have more of an impact on the team's performances and so it proved true with a number of the legs running into buffeting head winds.

Fossie led out and was looking good, was this an omen of things to come we wondered? By the 6km mark Fossie had cleared out into 5th place overall, yes A, B, C, the old crocks had all started together and we were only being headed by 4 teams in the country. Nervous looks started to appear over a number of the faces in the team, but we reassured ourselves that this was in fact a premonition only and that things would come right as the race progressed. Unfortunately Fossie had peaked a little early in the race and was looking for the baton changeover at the junior lap change, which was only 6k odd into the 9.9k lap.

At this stage reality and the wind started to bite and Fossie had to relinquish the odd place. Despite this it was a creditable performance and left us ahead of a number of A teams and 2nd in the B grade. El P took over and was quickly overcome by Wellington Harriers and a v. strong head wind, but in a Presidential run he fought back and by 6k had surged back in front of Wellington and was tracking Takapuna just ahead. The final kms down into Halcombe were quick as the runners were sheltered from the wind. Rob was awaiting his turn and with a small cushion to chasing teams he set off on 1.5 legs having been struggling with a bad foot. Rob put in an excellent run holding off Wellington, Lynndale and Pakuranga(final B grade winners) by pure guts and determination. Lynndale tried to take Rob when the changeover was in sight but Rob fought back with a massive sprint and regained his position to pass Robo a small lead over the chasing pack.

Unfortunately Robo was not in a fighting mood and quickly relinquished to the following teams including our old foes Ariki (Akaroa '93). After warming up for a few kms Robo decided that he should commence 1500m reps in preparation for next weeks World Master Track & Field Champs in Melbourne. Next in line and still in 3rd place in the B grade was a slimming down version of Mr Blobby, complete with his $5 safety glasses he fought his way over the back roads and back down into Halcombe. As he entered the small township many remarked on his lack of size and impressive form - were they related? Mowing Mate Murray had been given the final words of advice and was prepped and ready as Pascoe swung around the roundabout and headed for the changeover. Murray encountered a number of tough climbs through the early section of his lap but maintained pace despite the constant encouragement of the now recovered Pascoe. The final act was one of "B****R Off" as the encouragement reached its climax. Pascoe duly departed and headed for the changeover where Mark Meyer, now residing in Wellington but reacting to a late call up, was awaiting fresh faced and with family support a plenty.

The changeover and despite a valiant effort Wesley had slipped to 5th place in the B Grade. Still Mark looked in menacing form and appeared confident of pulling us back into contention. Unfortunately the wind was up a notch and pounding in Mark's face as he headed for the finish line and no amount of cheering and encouragement could block out the tiring effect of the wind as the odd runner slipped past. It was a tough day at the office - we completed, we did our best but this time our best wasn't good enough for line honours. Still as Mark later announced "It was tough but I enjoyed it!" … a good reflection on the days events.

The afternoon of reflection and recovery was followed by the Wesley Dine & Dash - a celebration of performances of the day and target setting for the future. Pascoe is on his way back but the next Wesley generation has started and are beginning to snap at the heels of some of their senior counterparts. It should be noted however that the best the juniors had to offer in the Wesley Pool Championship were readily and unmercifully dispatched to the boundary, which goes to show that there is life in the old dogs yet!!

Our thanks to Geoff for his efforts in coordinating many of the weekends events; like the ride home after the relay for the juniors, the cooking facilities for Pascoe's bacon & eggs and the secret balloting for the latest Wesley tradition "the Beige jacket" for the top junior National relay performance.

Junior Men's Race Report - Jeremy Elley-Brown (spelling corrections by El Presidente)

For the first time in 20 years Wesley had a Junior team in the Junior men's grade. This was quite an achievement in itself. The race day dawned and the Wesley Athletes stugled out of bed and got ready for the nine o'clock start. The first runner was Garrith (aka Fazz), who didn't have the best of starts due to not having a race number on the back of his singlet. After some frantic work by Geoff to get the race number on Garrith was soon away, (about 30 seconds after the race had started.) Garrith ran an extremely sensible race and steadily worked his way through the field and handed onto the capable hands of Andrew. Andrew accended Mount Biggs with great gusto and overtook tiring runners and literally ran his guts out. Joseph was up next and ran extremely well through the undulating country roads to maintain a good position. Jeremy took on the 4th leg of 7.3 k's and kept the team in the running. Onto Malcolm next who started off head to head with the Pakuranga teams runner and ran strongly to insure a good position going into the final leg. Adnan had the final honour of finishing off for the Wesley team and had an excellent run with a strong finish to seal a top 10 placing. An awesome effort guys 10th in NZ. We wil be back next year stronger than ever.

Ps- Big thankyou to Sue and Geoff Haigh and Ian who made the trip possible.

pps- I seem to have lost the beige jacket,( im not kidding) i'll look out for a replacement.

Saturday 14 September 2002 Auckland Road Relay Champs
Wesley had its first junior men's team in this event for almost 20 years which is a great achievement in its own right. Despite this being many of the teams first year running they performed well under the pressure of the senior team. Keep it up lads.

Pascoe added spice to the day with his usual antics. Delayed arrival saw El P running leg 2 on the basis of a 2nd effort on lap 7. Despite calling ahead to the support crew the word was not passed through to El P as "We thought you were running hard enough". Then as Mike P warmed up for lap 6 Pascoe felt the urge and then found another urge on the way back from the first one as he passed the sausage stand. Despite being the last lap runner about to commence his vigorous warm up Pascoe could not resist. Meanwhile Mike had discovered that he did not have his race singlet on and that it was now locked firmly in Pascoe's car as Moorman approached the finish line. Unfortunatley the 2nd Pascoe urge had delayed his return and now a frantic Mike searched the crevices for the mightly Pascoe as David M stood at the changeover looking for his team mate.

Eventually Dave decided that something terrible must have occurred and determined he strode off for another lap. Supporters looked on in disbelief as the Pakuranga team we were leading going into the change reappeared with a new runner in the lead and then out came Dave again!! and whats this ???? hes being chased by Potter up the road. El P stood in rushed Mike into the vehicle and preceeded to overtake Moorman and deposit Mike for a newly arranged changeover. It must be said that by this stage poor Mike had blown himself up and lost composure(as we all would) and took sometime to recover his form. Still it did add to the colour of the day.

Another excellent day on the podium for Wesley with a silver and bronze in the Junior Men events. Unfortunately Andrew Haigh was unable to repeat his medal winning performance from the cross country despite the eager encourage of old man Haigh. Top performance of the day was Malcolm Hicks who took out silver after his bronze effort at the XC Champs. The boys are looking to put a team in the National Road Relay champs, first Wesley JM since I was a young lad, so it will be great to see them on the National scene.

Saturday 17 August 2002 John Riddell Memorial Relay
The weather managed to hold out although the weather was cool. Numbers were up 50% from last year and some positive comments about the race were encouraging. Everyone enjoyed the low key nature of the event, a good testing course and speedy prize giving. Thanks to those who made it happen on the day - Bob & Kaye, Alan Jones, Rob Jessop, RObo, MC Geoff Haigh, Mike Potter in the kitchen plus others who helped out on corners like Garry Watt, Royce Norton, Dave Moorman and others.

Saturday 3 August 2002 Glen Eden 10 Mile Road Race & Wesley 10 Mile Champs
A top field of Auckland's Premier athletes decended upon Glen Eden for the Iron Man's Road Race. This race is the oldest consequtively run road race in Auckland and is run around the West Coast Road, Carter Road and the Scenic Driveway. Its tough and demanding but a beautifully scenic course. The Glen Eden club put on a fantasic afternoon tea and prize giving with Maree Neill taking away a $400 shower fitting for her trouble.

Having contemplated running this event for a number of years I was pleased to finally make the starting line and wish I had done so a few years ago. I heartily reccommend this event and encourage a few more of you to get out and give it a go next year. This year we combined our 10 Mile Handicap race with Glen Eden so a few more entrants would have been good. Dave Rowbotham was unfortunately struck down with injury the day before the race which prevented him from taking out 2nd place.

I should bring attention to Jonathon Drake's run, putting in an excellent performance and looking good at the end - I am certainly expecting an improved PB from Jonathon at the Auckland 1/2 marathon. Congratulations also to Jonathon on being appointed the Product Marketing Specialist - Business Critical Servers at Hewlett-Packard.

6th July 2002 North Island Cross Country Champs, Taupo
Held as usual at the excellent course at Spa Park the conditions were perfect for racing - slightly cool & overcast and as usual rock hard under foot making it a very fast course with a lot of dips and dives. In the U20 men Jeremy ran very well finishing 13th, while in the U18 men Andrew ran through the field in the second lap to finish 6th. This is a very good weekend away, very well organised and on a great course so for those who didn't run or haven't run this in a while I recommend you try it next year.

Although some rain had fallen the track along the foreshore grass of the Long Bay Park was reasonally firm under foot. This race offered the juniors in the club to stamp their mark in the combined age group races. Andrew Haigh missed a great opportunity to take an important scalp as he sat helpless on the sideline dreaming of what could have been. Jeremy put in a solid effort taking out 3rd place in the M20 as he continues to improve.

Report from Brent Foster - World ITU Races
I had a good three races on the ITU (International triathlon union) world cup circuit the last two months. All races under the ITU banner are very competitive as they give you world ranking points and the more points you have the more chance of making world cup races, world champs and the top fifty (provided you are top two or three in your country and meet your federation's criteria) by May 2004 qualify you for the Olympics. So far on only three races I am ranked fortieth.

I was 12th in both the Ishigaki and Gamagori world cups and am very proud to get my first international win in the China ITU International beating 1999 world champ Dimitry Gaag. Thousands of people lined the cobble streets and cheered and many tv cameras were at the end with myself giving several interviews. Dali, China is part third world but the people sell lots of tourist items at very reasonable prices. EVERYBODY toots their horn when driving and this is quite annoying when going for a training run! Lots of healthy food there although one cannot drink the water - it must be boiled first. Quite beautiful with mountains and lakes around and it was at an altitude of 2000m.

Regards
Brent

Sunday 23rd June 2002 Massey X-C
Venue: Moire Park, Massey
Wesley had some great results in very muddy conditions. Renee and Erin pushed each other hard to finish 10th and 11th while Felicity Gunn ran superbly to finish 8th. In the U18&U20 races Jeremy and Joseph finished on strongly to field well up in their fields. Mean while Andrew Haigh was in lala land after collapsing 400m from his first Grand Prix victory. Andrew consoled himself at the thought that At least Sussex was blissfully unaware of the days carnage but somehow, someway he latched onto it and has been keen to rub it in at every possible opportunity with a series of well rehearsed "cant you make the finish" jokes.

Friday/Saturday 21/22 June 2002 World 100km Champs
Venue: Tourhout, Belguim
Congratulations to Mike Potter on an excellent performance at the World Champs - read all about it below.

All well here after the 36hr trip.- staying up late to get ready for the 8pm start. Thanks to all for the many well wishes. Internet time is xpensive here so we have no time to reply to all of you. Host family fantastic, we will be billeted through to the race staying 20km from Tourhout- chickens, rabbit, and a deer in the backyard; nice country setting in Flanders fields.

Weather hot 20-30° during the day cools off in the evg: Have had a bruised calf thanks to an incident with a bag at Heathrow- complicated by some form of dvt-I suspect- does the coach have any advice?
Last minute training going to plan doing nothing much but eat. Have met the Brazilian and Mexican teams- a shame we are not in the teams race- Brazilians had a message for Robo but we are unable to translate- something about its better to be a pom than an argie but then again how many world cup losses does it take before you realise you are only good enough for the top 8.

Individuals look tough to beat but Brighty is up to it. Spent yesterdqy in Bruges- fascinating medieval city-dined on the mussels fries and waffles with cream- staying off the red wine but tempted by the natural
beer.

National Secondary Schools X-C Champs

Venue: Blenhiem
A good weekend away and was enjoyed by all and many of the clubs members went down in the Mt Roskill Grammar School team. On a hard, flat course Renee and Erin were both close together at the finish With Renee being the victor but Erin was unfairly deprived of a few places with people passing her in the finishing chute. Malcolm Hicks had a barnstorming run to finish 9th in the junior boys. While Jeremy and Andrew both ran well on the 6km course with Andrew finishing 15th and Jeremy finishing 64th.

Some excellent performances from Wesley runners below especially the junior men's team. Andrew & Jeremy led home our junior men's team in fine fashion although not managing to match the feats of the infamous Wesley Junior Men;'s team of 1983 in winning the Team's title - still something for you young lads to aim for next year. Erin also ran well in the junior combined fun run finishing first girl in a race that she confessed was a little on the short side - still a gutsy effort over a testing course(no results avail for this race).

Nike Grand Prix Race 2 -
Article by Haigh Jnr.
Venue: Lloyd Elsmore Park, Cascades Road, Pakuranga
Held in very wet and nasty conditions only the tough of the club managed to run this race. But those who ran had some very good results. Felicity Gunn ran very well in the under 12 girls to finish 15th , well inside the top half of her field. In the under 18 men Andrew Haigh ran solidly to finish 4th , While Joseph Nunweek and Adnan Islam, having their first cross county's for the club ran very well, Joseph finishing strongly in 15th and Adnan also having a creditable run in 25th. In the under 20 men Jeremy Elley Brown ran a very good race crossing the line in 5th place. Hope to see some seniors there next year (?).

27 April 2002 Rotorua Marathon
Despite a very wet Friday evening, the Fletcher Challenge Forests Marathon was contested in excellent conditions this morning. Katsumi Tsuchiya (Japan) won the men's open title in 2 hours 25min and 58 sec, while Mark Bright who finished 3 minutes behind him won the Athletics NZ Men's Open Marathon Championship title. In the women's event Eveline Coombe ran down Bernie Portenski in the closing stages of the race finishing in 3 hours 18 sec.

Good effort by the Wesley boys but we failed to make the podium for the Club team results - there is always next year!

13 April 2002 Beehive Mile
Venue: Cornwall Park
A good field lined up for the 20th? running of the Beehive Mile. A few of the young guns had their eyes firmly fixed on taking out the Auckland 800m/1500m Champion, but unfortunately for them first to the first corner did not translate into final placings. Andrew Haigh fought brilliantly but was reined in down Twin Oaks Drive by some of the more experienced competitors(maybe next year?). Mention should be made also of a number of new young runners who made their first appearance especially Erin who ran an excellent time chased hard by Renee. A good start to the season.
