Saturday 6 December 2003 Kepler Challenge - 60km Mountain Run
Venue: Kepler Track, Fiordland
If you are looking for a challenge or just want to enjoy some fantasic scenery then check out the Kepler Track. Having run it three times now I can say it has got me every time and when you under prepare it gets you more.Having been collected by the boys from Queenstown Airport, also dropping off Brent Foster at his lodgings (down for the World Tri Champs and having already won the World Acquathon earlier in the week he was back for more), we headed via the scenic route to Te Anau Youth Hostel. All in together the accomodation was excellent and cheap.

Carbo loading at the local pizza palour, plus a bottle of red wine (or 2) for Mr Pascoe, in preparation for his 5th effort on the track, finished preparation nicely. The morning dawned early with nerves a plently and on the way to the start line - Blobby announces he is coming back again next year but is having a week to acclimatize to the South Island next time. I suspect this was a phychological tactic to put off Mr Vernon who had been rumoured as the DARK horse - strong and fit.

The event was tough on mind and body but we all made it and some are keen to go again in 2004 - if you want to go check out the Kepler Challenge website

Saturday 30 August 2003 John Riddell Memorial Relay
Venue: Cornwall Cricket Club, Cornwall Park
A great day helped by lovely weather conditions resulted in record teams competing in the John Riddell Relay. Although Lynndale again proved a little too quick for the Wesley boys it was a close fought thing. Some excellent performances and enjoyable conditions were topped with a great afternoon tea spread and wonderful prizes. Our guest compere did us proud - we will miss those velvet tones at next years event.

Thanks to our sponsors Kumfs Shoes, La Maison du Chocolat, Hubbards Cereals & Shoe Science Newmarket.

Saturday 2 August 2003 Glen Eden Road Race & Wesley 10 Mile Handicap
Venue: Glen Eden

In excellent fine cool conditions Lynndale athletes took the honours, Mark Bright winning the mens section in 55m 12s and Di Cooper the women's in 64m 55s. Bright, last year's national marathon champion was chased by Ian Richards of Auckland University on the climb to Scenic Drive. However on the downhill back into Glen Eden Bright opened up a lead which he held to the finish. Richards, who won the 2001 race was second ahead of last year's winner Ian Sussex.

Cooper, sixth in 2001, was a comfortable winner of the women's race, beating Karen Murphy by nearly three minutes and finishing 9th overall. Murphy, three times national steeplechase champion as well as a former national cross-country and mountain champion, was having her first race in three years. The host Glen Eden club won the teams event.

Thanks to Cool Runnings for this report.

A bit of a dull cool day for this years champs but at least the ground was firm. We saw some excellent performances from the juniors especially. The club managed to repeat last year's efforts with 3 championship medals to Malcolm, Andrew and El P but alas no Gold. Thanks to those who got out and gave the runners a bit of support even if you didn't run.

Saturday 13 July 2003 Massey Cross Country
Venue: Moire Park, Massey

Small fields this year at Massey but the sunshine helped to make it a pleasant day despite the very muddy underfoot conditions. Andrew Haigh (a la Mr Bean) provided the highlight of the day with a powerful front of the field run in the U20 Men. Leading all the way and putting the pressure on the rest of the field early on there was no stopping the man! Even the Herald commented that he keeps "looking better every race". Apparantly the race this year was shortened to assist Andy making the finish line after last year's up and down last 300m!! Well done to the others who also made the effort.

Saturday 21 June 2003 NZ Secondary Schools XC Champs (Report by Mr Bean)
Venue: Tretham, Wellington
W
eather: sunny/windy

This years course was unexpectedly firm under foot considering the rain in the week leading up to the Champs.

In the first race of the day our own Biruk Belachew cut down the leader 1500m into his race and made a move with about 1km to go to win comfortably by 5 seconds the Yr 9 race for his 1st (of many????) NZ Championships. Fetalow "waswrongwithyou" Zomo also fromm Mt Roskill Grammar, but is running for ACA, managed to pinch 3rd place on the line. Mobeen Rosatmy made a HUGE improvement from his 79th at Auckland Champs to place 53rd in a field of 162.

Next up was the junior girls race here Renee ran well for 72nd place. Erin was forced to wait till later in the day for her race where she ran strongly for 79th place in the 1st year ofthe senior girls 3 year grade.

With the last race of the day Andrew forced angry, tired and disgruntled team mates to stay to watch his race which he ended up finishing 13th.

3 May 2003 NZ Marathon Championships/39th Rotorua Marathon
(Incorporates NZ Masters Athletics Marathon)
Venue: Rotorua
Certainly it was a quality not quantity effort by Wesley this year. Rob had agreed to make up the team and be the 4th runner but alas foot injury worries were on the mind for Dr Bob and despite a valient effort he could not make the whole journey.

Despite this the club had three excellent performances with Mike Potter first home in 4th place and showing some real strength over the closing kms. Ian Sussex was 9th home and in doing so was the first Veteran/Master and took out the NZ title. Rob our last last runner home put in a sterling effort cracking 3 hours, no mean feat at Rotorua, and especially for someone who really prefers the hills and grass.

Saturday 26 April 2003 Beehive Mile(Juniors & Seniors)
Venue: Cornwall Park
Questions were to be asked of the seniors with the fast flying Hicks and Haigh. Would it be the first time a junior would take out the Beehive title since El P did it back in 1983? Well of course history was about to repeat with Malcolm proving to slick and fast even for the mighty Haigh.

Thomas and Alex ran extremely well keeping some on the seniors on their toes. Watch out boys!!

Saturday 12 April 2003 Southland Centennial Relays
Venue: Lovelock Track, Mt Albert
The club had some excellent performances on the day with the juniors shining out and the seniors putting in a solid performace to get the season under way. Malcolm Hicks led out the "Senior" Junior team bring Wesley through the first lap in 1st place. Renee and then Erin kept us right up there despite running against the boys. Michael Grey had his first outing for the club and pulled in some places with an excellent performace.

The "Junior" Juniors were not phased by the size of some of the competing teams and with 3 out of the 4 having their first race they did really well in being placed 29 out off the 40 teams. There was some real fighting spirit shown here - well done you guys wait until you are up against only the junior teams!

A couple of late defections put the senior teams into a spin but the end results were crediable. The Fox (JN) was back with a double effort in the B team and Carl was given the job of leading them out in his first race for Wesley. The Senior A finished 5th and for the 2nd year took out the closest to estimated time, I will remain humble not tell you the handicapper for the past two seasons!
