Saturday 2 October 2004 NZ Road Relay Champs Venue: Nelson JUNIOR REPORT By Mr Bean After assembling a team with time in hand this year without any last minute call ups the Junior Men's team was ready for a big performance. The team got away to a fine start, with Simon Bucknell running well for 6th place at the change over a little more than 30 seconds from the leaders. Simon tagged Biruk who proceeded to attempt to make up the deficit in the first km, However Biruk found the hill tough going - "harder than Waiatarua" was one of the only quotes we are allowed to print infact. Despite this he slugged out the grueling lap and kept the team in contention when he tagged Adnan aka "the black zebra". With a Beige Jacket performance Adnan was the 7th Fastest Junior Male on his lap, leaving a Hill city runner floundering in his wake as he descended the hill, improving the team's position. Next up was William Curtayne who very nearly snatched the Beige Jacket from Adnan, when he powered up the hill, taking 4th fastest time on his lap (Wesley's best individual placing). Andrew Curtayne, Spurred on by a combination of his brothers performance and his Team Powerade wonder fluid, worked hard to catch a Wellington Harriers runner, taking 40 seconds out of him (if you couldn't tell the difference between the Curtayne Brothers, Andrew was the one hobbling about on Sunday recovering from his downhill lap). Andrew Haigh, awaited Andrew at the next change over. At this stage the team were in 6th place, just one short of the aim of 5th. Andrew shrugged off concerns about his ability to make it all the way to the finish after his national cross country dramatics to pass the Wellington Harriers runner about 5km into his 8km lap and held on to 5th place till the finish. With all the team back next year and the
team is hoping to go four places better!
FULL RESULTS Saturday 25 September 2004 Honey Pot Mile Venue: 1:30pm, Epsom Methodist Chuch Hall, Manukau/Pa Road, One Tree Hill Despite the rather dodgie conditions and a slow wet course through the finishing area there were some fine performances. Fossie slowed some of his returning powers by pushing young Haggis all the way but those young fresh legs had just enough kick to hold him out. William Harris improved by an incredible 35 seconds from the Beehive Mile and Thomas Sussex bought home the junior field. Our thanks to the Craddocks from ACA for assisting with the timing and to Dave Moorman and Mark Robinson is tracking in the juniors and uttering words of encouragement.
Saturday 11 September 2004 Auckland Road Relay Championships Venue: Papakura Masters Men took out Bronze whilst our Junior Men's team collected Silver. Good effort at short notice by the boys. Well done to the composite team who took out their grade also not of championship standing. Results Saturday 11 September 2004 World IAU 100km Championships Venue: Winschoten, Europe Report from Mrs Potter Got a phone call from Mike just after the race (7.45am NZ time) to say that he did a personal best on the flat course: 7 hours 34 minutes 10 seconds (we think in the top 30 places - there were 2 women ahead of him.) He was very pleased as his training time had been shortened beforehand. He did the first 50 km in 7hr20m speed but had nothing in his legs to carry on. Was doing 10km in 44 min and the last 10km he did in 45 min. So a fantastic effort I think! Now seriously thinking of doing the World 100km Champs in Japan next year...perhaps with the whole family in tow... He bet Mark Bright by 40 seconds - he had
stomach troubles earlier in the 33 Mike Potter 7:34:07 (22nd M20) WESLEY Women (placings are based on overall
finishers)

Full Results Saturday 7 August 2004 New Zealand Cross Country Championships Venue: Hastings Unofficial reports have Mr A Haigh DNF in U20M after being infected by the deadly wobblysidewaysalmosthomebutnotquitegetoutofmywayDad virus. Meanwhile Biruk just missed out on the medals with a 4th place - still one more year in the grade. Auckland officials including Mr G Haigh performed to their usual high standard. Well done to all.
Saturday 31 July 2004 Glen Eden 10 Mile & Wesley 10 Mile Champs Venue: West Auckland Mountains! Foster, Pascoe and Vernon headed West to face the challenge of the Waitaks and in their own way defied gravity and scaled the dizzy heights of success.
Sunday 25 July 2004 Auckland Cross Country Championships Venue: Auckland Domain What a day - wow and for a change no mud bath. Track was pretty dry all the way and Wesley had some excellent results with 2 Auckland Champs - congrats to Andrew & Biruk. Some other runners who put in outstanding performances included Jordan Sussex and William Harris. William has continued to improve each race this season and on Sunday he went to a new level again - fantastic - well done.
Full Results Sunday 10 July 2004 Massey Cross Country Venue: Moire Park, Massey Saturday 3 July 2004 North Island Cross Country Championships Venue: Spa Park, Taupo A quality team headed to Taupo for the annual North Island champs. With the team being lead off the field by G Haigh and on the field by A Haigh success was never going to come easy. The Top Ten holiday camp was base for a two day stint in Taupo and provided all the comforts of home including burnt pancakes on Saturday night. Race day was reasonably fine, although the one serious downpour occured during the U13G race which meant support for Jemma and Felicity was at an all time low. A Haigh looked good for 85% of the race until a serious downturn in form lead to a less glorious finish. The performance of the weekend was a Bronze by Biruk who has another year to run in the U17M grade. All in all it was a great weekend away and flying down the Rotorua ludge was a fitting end to a thrill a minute weekend. A Haigh triumps again conquering all sleeping records and in the process entering "The Swan" competition. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
Full Results 19 June 2004 NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country Champs - Dunedin Conditions: Overcast & mild, Very muddy underfoot Once again Wesley's own Biruk Belachew, the self-proclaimed Mohamed Ali of Cross Country Running proved too strong for his field in the Junior Boy's 4000m Event. After staying back inside the top 10 in the 1st lap he moved up in the early part of the 2nd lap and moved past the race leader with 1 km to go and held him out by 6 seconds for his 2nd consecutive National Secondary Schools Cross Country title (won the Year 9 race last year). Congratulations Biruk! Mobeen Rostamy, also running in the junior Boys race crossed the line in 97th place. Felicity Gunn competed well in her first national cross country, finishing 54th Out of a large Year 9 Field. Felicity's sister Renee also had a good run, finishing 74th in the Senior Girls race, with a year left in the grade. In the Senior Boy's

Full Results Wednesday 19 May 2004 Auckland Secondary Schools Cross Country Champs (Mr Bean) Venue: St Kentergins College A warm sunny afternoon at St Kents with alittle mud in some places after heavy rain last week. It was a successful day for Wesley, with 3 of its members taking medals (Biruk, Simon, Andrew), And in the Senior Boys event getting 4 inside the top 8!! 1st up for the day at 1.30 were the junior girls. Felicity Gunn ran the 3km lap well finishing a creditable 37th. Half an hour later at 2pm William Harris ran to finish 67th place In only his 2nd cross country. Next came the intermediate girl's race at 2.30 where Renee Gunn ran extremely well, finishing 14th in her grade. The intermediate Boys event was an exciting event. Mathew Mildenhall of Auckland Grammar built up a big lead leaving the two Mt Roskill boys, Biruk Belachew and Fetalow Zomo to fight it out for second place. The pair tracked each other over the last lap and Biruk won on the line in an exciting sprint finish. In the Senior Girls event Erin Edwards had a barnstorming start, leading the field around the first bend, and finished a solid 39th place. At 4 o'clock it was time for the Senior Boys race. Dino Bozzone of Rangitoto College outran the field, Beating Andrew Haigh into 2nd place, and Simon Bucknell running strongly for 3rd despite carrying a cold. The next Wesley runner in was Andrew Curtayne of St Kents College in 5th place, with his brother William following him in with 8th place. Full Results Sunday 2 May 2004 Glen Eden Childrens Relay Venue: Glen Eden Top effort by the young guns in beating many teams with older boys - watch these boys go!
Saturday 1 May 2004 Rotorua Marathon (New Zealand Championships) Venue: Rotorua A change of starting venue, a small course change and new promotors lead to some new hype and excitement at the start of this years event. Pascoe was still trying to get his eyes in as the runners waited for the gun - still at least it would be a better story then getting caught in the bushes and failing to break 2.5hrs! A good number of Wesleys & Ex-Wesley comebackers chatted before the race each with their own set of excuses as to why PBs weren't on this year. Potter arrived in fine form coughing and spluttering his excuse - although making it to the line some of his good form was still likely to show through. For those who ended up on the track for a while the day was a little unpleasant for those of us who benefited from a bit of training the wet weather was a ok. The new organisation was certainly an improvement and with the new 5k & 10k this event is one for the whole family. See you there next year?
Full Results Saturday 24 April 2004 Southland Centennial Relays Venue: Lovelock Track, Sandringham Some great performances by some of the young guns in the club. Biruk started off the day in fine fashion demolishing the field and showing a clean pair of heels to all the competition. The Prasad family made up most of the AllStars team and did a great job with plently of smiles and encouragement from Dad. Special mention for William Harris who had his first run for the club and ended up taking Michael Grey's place and performing with great credit in bring the Gallopers home in 2nd place (results incorrectly shows an all boys team in 2nd). Well done also to Andy Haigh and Simon Bucknell who were the fastest non NSBays runners. ![]() ![]()
Full Results Saturday 3 April 2004 Beehive Mile Venue: One Tree Hill A good turnout for the first event of the year saw some close racing with a couple of dead heats. It was great to see a number of new faces as well. The juniors finally put the old boys to the sword with Andy Haigh posting a very smart time - just off the coach's record (Mike Gallagher 4:14). I'm afraid Mike that won't last much longer .
