2005 Andrew Curtayne got the team off to a solid start, coming in just 10 seconds after the leader, tagging to twin brother William (much to the confusion of some spectators who thought they were seeing things). William increased our lead over Wellington Scottish and Hamilton Hawks and on a grueling hill lap, lost only 15 seconds to world Mountain Running Rep from ACA, Aaron Jackson. Next up was (self selected) team Captain Andrew Haigh, who kept the team in 2nd over the 10 km lap trailing only to ACA at the changeover. Next up however, was what would be voted by the team a beige jacket performance. Simon Bucknell quickly ate up ACA's lead (like one of his beloved meat pies) and blew past, and with 3km to go was himself caught by Wellington Scottish star Terefe Ejigu. Simon's vegetable free diet paid dividends here however, and he hung on grimly and showed plenty of guts to come in only 5 seconds behind Wellington Scottish, in the run that set up the victory for Wesley, tagging Malcolm "Mr. Universe" Hicks, who tore past Scottish's lap 5 runner, putting 35 seconds on him, taking fastest time on lap 5 and handing over to a wound-up Biruk Belachew. Biruk began at a furious pace, and flew over the first km despite team members urging him to calm down! This had little affect on the young man and he continued to eat up the road, eventually settling down for the middle section and then turning it on in the last km to take fastest time on his lap as he powered the Wesley Junior Men to victory by almost 90 seconds and getting agonizingly close to the course record!!! Well done Team! Last
year we aimed at this title and it is great to have achieved
it. Special Thanks to Master Coach Mike Gallagher, Club President
Ian Sussex, Team Manager Geoff Haigh, our drivers Paul &
Mona Bucknell, The Lion Foundation, The Southern Trust and everyone
at Wesley who assisted us with selling chocolates for a fundraiser.
After fighting out the A grade and B grade in the last three National relays we took our medicine and headed for the basement and C Grade. However despite this we were some what confident of a good outcome despite the bunch of "recovering from injury crooks" that we had in the team. As Oliver had not seen the course he was allocated lap1 and surpringly enjoyed his outing - a tough lap at the best of times Ollie proved his metal with a great effort despite being overtaken on the downhill park of the lap by grey bauding guys!! The Flying Rib took over amongst rumours that despite his request to run the lap it had turned out to look a lot tougher in the flesh. Dave started quiet but finished strongly to hand off to Dr Bob - the flying haircut. Take it easy and then burn em was the call and surprisingly it was headed - maybre thoughts of 2001 when he was almost toppled by a young Andy Haigh on lap 4. Next was El Presidente taking over in 6th place, not the usual lap but injury and fitness dictated the "easy" lap this time - still up against a strong headwind the lead came into view and then we were clear. Pottee ran us further into the lead with an excellent effort and showing form that we haven't seem in 2005. Vernon was tasked with the hill lap and given the command to go hard for the first 600m to the hill and boy did he go!!! Jason Cameron from Bays A (and leading the A Grade) couldn't get past him for a few hundred metres despite changing only a few behind. Chris gritted his way up the hill putting in a great effort with the heat bearing down on him as well as the ACA womens team. Next Mr Blobby and well all we saw was the usual ambling departure and then dust as he disappeared with all our hopes into the one lap you can't follow on the course. Long lunches and too many corporate takeovers saw Blobby lose the lead and finsh the lap in 3rd place. Peter Heyes aka Mike Gallagher took over and looked good making ground on 2nd place when "bang" she went - the calf that was and we settled for 3rd place and a bit of honour to boot. Well done guys - not bad for a bunch of old farts (excluding Ollie of course), but its A grade or bust next year! Wesley Senior A teams at Akaroa 1993, 1997, 2001, 2005 & the Record Team! Saturday 17 September 2005 Honeypot Mile Venue: One Tree Hill Well not quite the turnout as we had for the Beehive - I guess the ballot box and end of season blues were contributing factors. Potter put it onthe line with a comeback performance but Dr Bob came good 200m from home with a burst of speed and power that saw Mike reaching for his ventalator. The junior boys showed great improvement from the Beehive and from last years Honeypot - great effort guys.
Saturday 10 September 2005 Auckland Road Relay Champs Venue: Lloyd Elsmore Park In preparation for the National Relay champs Wesley entered some untried combinations in the Auckland Relays - this was also part of the Grand Master Plan of G Haigh (Campaign Strategist) to throw potential competitors off the pace.Looking at the results his plan appears to have worked! Good effort by Junior 1 taking out the silver medal. FULL RESULTS Masters Men

Saturday 27 August 2005 John Riddell Relay & 1k Junior Challenge Venue: Cornwall Park A beautiful day once again this year and the turnout for the Junior 1km Challenge took us all by surprise. It appeared to be enjoyed by all and many parents wondering what this relay was all about. Our grateful thanks to our generous sponsors Kumfs Footwear, La Maison du Chocolat, Shoe Science Newmarket & Pronto Watch & Clock Company - please support them.
Saturday 27 August 2005 Australian Cross Country Champs Venue: Victoria Park Raceway, Adelaide Very hot conditions so I was pleased to
be racing early at 11.45. Moved through the field on the last
few laps, thought I might catch 3rd for a while but in the end
I came 10 seconds short. Thanks to Wesley Harriers, Athletics
Auckland (and my folks!) for financial assistance getting to
Adelaide.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Saturday 6 August 2005 New Zealand Cross Country Champs Venue: Rabbit Island, Nelson Fine day, with some good performances by our 2 Auckland Reps, Biruk and Andrew. Biruk raced first over 6000m, and tried hard to hang on to the eventual winner, Waikato's Jake Robertson, but this proved his undoing in the end as he faded to 5th, just behind his great mate Fetalow Zomo of ACA in a spectacular sprint finish. Andrew ran a good tactical race, to move into 2nd with 2000m remaining and hold it to the finish after Hayden McLaren of Canterbury lead from the start, winning by a margin of 17 seconds. In the Senior Events, Australia's Russell
Dessaix-Chin beat Phil Costley for 1st place in the Men's race;
however Costley won his 27th New Zealand title as he was the
1st New Zealander home, while in the Senior Women's event Kate
McIlroy of Wellington, beat rival Jessica Ruthe by 1 minute.

Sunday 24 July 2005 Auckland XC Champs (race six of the Grand Prix series - FINAL) Also counts as the WESLEY XC Champs Venue: Auckland Domain - Grandstand The big cross country race of the year saw some excellent performances with medals in four grades - a special mention to our two Auckland Champs - Biruk and Andrew. There have been many new to cross country this year and it has been a year of learning - so to those new timers well done. Many of you have improved immensely over the season so that is great. MASSEY RUGBY CLUB, MOIRE PARK, GRANVILLE DRIVE, MASSEY Usual amount of mud prevailed at Massey but that seems to urge on some of the junior runners - one who slowed to ensure all puddles were stepped in. First effort on the cross country to new member Oliver Knowles (aka Dessert Boy not to be confused with News Boy). Another stand out performer was Emily Robinson who really took to the mud and showed she will be a force to reckon with next year. FULL RESULTS ![]() ![]()

Saturday 28 May 2005 Macrennie Construction XC (race two of the Grand Prix series) Venue: Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. Some excellent performances again - William and Buirk both again winning their races but a couple of other standouts Simon Bucknell 2nd in the M20 and Keiran Wood coming 3rd in the B11 - his inter-club first race! Also coming back into form is Michael Grey with an impressive finishing 400m overtaking a number of athletes in the process. FULL RESULTS Photos - U11s line up and Eugene in action ![]() ![]()

Biggest improvement from 2004 was William Harris taking off a wopping 56 seconds whilst the biggest decline was by young Haggis (A Haigh) with a 4+minute decline - obviously too many black puddings.
Saturday 14 May 2005 HEB Cross Country Venue: Clevedon Polo Grounds, Kawakawa Bay Rd, Clevedon Some excellent performances from our small team that ventured to Clevedon. Congratulation to the grade winners and especially William Harris who after coming near the tail of the field last year has jumped from 22nd to 1st - wow thats is some improvement!
Sunday 8 May 2005 Glen Eden Harrier's 2005 Children's Relay Venue: Ceramco Park, Glendale Road, Glen Eden ![]() After only one team in 2004, five Wesley teams lined up in 2005. Unfortunately the handicapper hmanaged to get it totally wrong and we were well out on our estimated times. Despite that our teams did extremely well in the prize allocation and two missing out because of an early departure. The smiling faces show that a good time was had by all. Keep it up team. My pick of the runners were Luke Refoy and Victoria Sussex both ran extremely well over the cross country course. Welcome again to some new faces at Wesley. Laps 1 & 4 3k Road, Laps 2 & 3 1.5k XC
![]() ![]() Saturday 7 May 2005 Rotorua Marathon Venue: Rotorua Bets laid clearly had Pascoe as the all out contender for line honours, for not making the line on time that is. Alas Potter, after years of training, finally came back to break the Master and take out the last to the start line award. In fact he made it easy and gave the entire field a clean getaway before he made his move. We will never know if this was in fact a planned effort on behalf of Mike but he finally caught Pascoe at the 12k mark. Pascoe was lkater heard to remark "I felt like I was standing still" - well this might also have been true. Andrew Norton made a return to Wesley colours in fine style taking out his younger brother The Fox Norton - well done mate - life in the old dog still!
Saturday 9 April 2005 Australian U20 Track & Field Champs Venue: Brisbane Our two representatives in the Auckland team to the Aussie Under 20 champs in Brisbane both picked up bronze medals. The conditions were hot which obviously impacted on the times. Simon Bucknell 3rd in the 1500m in 3m58.95 Andrew Haigh 3rd in the 5000m in 15m 28.38 Saturday 9 April 2005 Southland Centennial Relays Venue: Lovelock Track, Sandringham Road Extension, Mt Roskill. Great effort by our
junior runners with the All Stars team taking out the line honours
over the much fancied ACA and Pakuranga clubs. (William Harris,
Biruk Belachew, Michael Grey L-R (Betsy Hassett missing)). The
whole team performed extremely well but standout effort was by
Betsy who had a excellent run.Jordan Sussex was the pick of the rest of the juniors with a solid effort and looking mean. Welcome to some new runners Luke, Matthew M. and Matthew W. ![]() Mike Potters Invitational team performed with credit and a great comeback effort by Mike Gallagher saw the Old Geasers off to a flyer. A solid A team performance kept Wesley inside the top 10 again in 2005 although the absence of Bucknell and Haigh in Australia did have its impact. Full Junior Results Full Senior Men Results
