If was great to see some of the battles for the Wesley Championships in the junior grades. The weather was kind and despite a couple of muddy spots the course was fast and pretty flat. Race of the day was the G10 grade with our three runners changing places at regular intervals throughout the race and then finished within 2 seconds of each other. Special mention for Daniel who gave it all but due to sickness had to pull out during the early part of the B12 race.

With Biruk recovering at home from a hospital visit Simon Jager took out our only Auckland Championship medal of the day with 3rd place in the M19. Simon had just returned from competing for NZ in Orienteering in Australia and winning the NZ Secondary Schools Orienteering title the previous weekend- so clearly he is in great form.

The weather held out for us with some lovely sunshine and a few drops of rain. The track offered up its usual quantity of mud but the juniors handled it extremely well. Top performance by Victoria Sussex who gained her top placing for the season with 5th in the G10 and another top effort by Michael Dawson having a very strong run. The best finish of the day came from Nathan McCarthy to hold out a fast finishing Emily Ellicock. Well done guys.

Another great weekend away and some excellent performances despite most of the juniors having to step up against older runners because of different gradings. The weather was sunny and warm but cool in the morning and evening (very cool). Performance of the day was Biruk which a gutsy run for a bronze medal.

Andy confirms that 3 heads are better than one, while the coach (Mike the Pencil) looks on bewildered and Dad (aka The Haggis) displays one of the many potions that got Andy to the finish line - thankfully he wasn't tested afterwards. Meanwhile Biruk, also coached by the pencil, but without the Haggis wonder syrups, took out 3rd place and a very shiny medal - no wonder hes smiling!!

Warm and sunny conditions out at long bay this year, with a fast, surface to run on. Biruk took out 1st in the M19 race despite managing to miscount laps and surging a lap early (2 lap race!). The boys in the B12 grade had strong representation with 7 runners in the race, the best of them on the day being Kieran Woods in 4th place. Juliet Norton ran well in the MW40 category, as did club president, Ian Sussex making a return to cross country in the MM40 grade. Andrew Haigh placed 4th in the Senior Men's grade.

Saturday 10 June 2006 Auckland Teams Cross Country Champs
(GRAND PRIX XC SERIES - RACE 3)

Venue: Hayman Park, Manukau City
The least muddy of the Cross Country Series thus far, although still some thick bog in places. Wesley had some good results through the grades with the B10, G10 and B12 grades all taking out 3rd in the team's events. Unfortunately not enough of our junior men were running to defend the team's championship held for the past 2 years with a number of runners resting up for NZ champs next week after the Auckland Secondary Schools race on Wednesday. William Curtayne provided Wesley's only individual top 3 of the day with 3rd place in the M19 grade. Andrew Haigh won the Olsen gate for 1st (and only!) Wesley senior man home in 5th place over all.

Good results also from Simon and Jordan in the senior race, William in the intermediate boys and Ben Bakalich in the junior boys race. Great effort all round with some great efforts over a very demanding course. 2.7k for all runners, further for some if you ran extra fast. Venue: Clevedon Polo Grounds, Kawakawa Bay Rd, Clevedon.
It was wet and muddy at Clevedon but there was a good turnout of hardy Wesley runners. Ainie led out the Wesley charge in Race 1 in what I think was her first competitive outing and she looked good!! - well done. There were some great tussles in the 10/12 and 19 races between Wesley runners. Great efforts by Ben Bakalich in the B14. Wesley Junior Men were out in force claiming 3,4 5, 8 and 9th place and a A. Haigh great first effort in the senior mens grade.

Saturday 22 APRIL 2006 Beehive Mile
Venue: Cornwall Park
Good turnout for the 26th running although times were down due to the slightly warm conditions and the head wind. Haigh didn't manage to break the race record - in fact he didn't get very close at all - more week-bix for young Andy. Great to see the Ellery-Brown family out again and obviously in good form. There were a number of close tussles, the B12 especially with five of them within 25 seconds of each other. Congratulations to the closest to estimated chocolate fish winners Jessicaestimating to the second, with Timmy only 3 seconds out and Steve and Keiran only 5 seconds out - AMAZING!
